SUMMARY:Native Women & Friends Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Hello\,\nWho We Are:\nWe\, the Native Women & Friends Book Club of the Twin Cities\, are a group of Women who love to read and love to share our insights and feelings about good books. If you like to share intelligent (but not stuffy) conversation about what you read\, while having fun\, sharing a snack and making new friends please join us! Fiction\, non-fiction\, memoir\, bio/autobiography — good books. Books you have thought about reading and books that challenge what you ordinarily read. To sign up for our book club send: full name and email to nwbcmpls@gmail.com.\nWhen we meet:\nWe meet the last Sunday of every month. We will meet at 11am on Zoom and at 2pm in-person on May 22nd. In May we are meeting one week earlier due to Memorial Weekend.\nWhat we are reading this month:\nOur reading selected for May is My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Mending of Our Bodies and Hearts by Resmaa Menakem. A short summary of this book can be found at the bottom of this email.\nOur Meeting details are:\nWe will meet at 11am on Zoom and at 2pm in-person on May 22nd. The Zoom connection links will be sent to members the Friday before our meetup. Please email Allicia to join our book club and get the email notifications.\nNot a Speed Reader? NO PROBLEM!:\nWe encourage all who can attend even if you didn’t completely finish reading the book when our discussion time comes. We don’t judge\, but want to encourage you to participate as much as you can!\nBook Summary of My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Mending of Our Bodies and Hearts by Resmaa Menakem:\nThe body is where our instincts reside and where we fight\, flee\, or freeze\, and it endures the trauma inflicted by the ills that plague society.\nIn this groundbreaking work\, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of body-centered psychology. He argues this destruction will continue until Americans learn to heal the generational anguish of white supremacy\, which is deeply embedded in all our bodies. Our collective agony doesn’t just affect African Americans. White Americans suffer their own secondary trauma as well. So do blue Americans—our police.\nMy Grandmother’s Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not about the head\, but about the body\, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide.\nThis book paves the way for a new\, body-centered understanding of white supremacy—how it is literally in our blood and our nervous system. It offers a step-by-step solution—a healing process—in addition to incisive social commentary.\nResmaa Menakem\, MSW\, LICSW\, is a therapist with decades of experience currently in private practice in Minneapolis\, MN\, specializing in trauma\, body-centered psychotherapy\, and violence prevention. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and Dr. Phil as an expert on conflict and violence. Menakem has studied with bestselling authors Dr. David Schnarch (Passionate Marriage) and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score). He also trained at Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute.\n~Happy Reading~\nAllicia Waukau-Butler\nnwbcmpls@gmail.com\n(612) 816-3348

Menakem argues this destruction will continue until Americans learn to heal the generational anguish of white supremacy\, which is deeply embedded in all our bodies. Our collective agony doesn’t just affect African Americans. White Americans suffer their own secondary trauma as well. So do blue Americans—our police. \nMy Grandmother’s Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not only about the head\, but about the body\, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide. \n\nPaves the way for a new\, body-centered understanding of white supremacy—how it is literally in our blood and our nervous system.\nOffers a step-by-step healing process based on the latest neuroscience and somatic healing methods\, in addition to incisive social commentary.\n\nResmaa Menakem\, MSW\, LICSW\, SEP\, has appeared on both The Oprah Winfrey Show and Dr. Phil as an expert on conflict and violence. He has served as director of counseling services for the Tubman Family Alliance; as behavioral health director for African American Family Services in Minneapolis; as a domestic violence counselor for Wilder Foundation; as a certified Military and Family Life Consultant for the U.S. Armed Forces; as a trauma consultant for the Minneapolis Public Schools; and as a Cultural Somatics consultant for the Minneapolis Police Department. As a Community Care Counselor\, he managed the wellness and counseling services for civilians on fifty-three US military bases in Afghanistan. Resmaa studied and trained at Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute\, as well as with Dr. David Schnarch (author of the bestselling Passionate Marriage) and Bessel van der Kolk\, MD (author of the bestselling The Body Keeps the Score). He currently teaches workshops on Cultural Somatics for audiences of African Americans\, European Americans\, and police officers. He is also a therapist in private practice. \nSensitive and probing\, this book from therapist Menakem delves into the complex effects of racism and white privilege. Departing from standard academic approaches\, he speaks from the wisdom of his grandmother and his own expertise in somatic therapy\, a field that emphasizes the mind-body connection—Publisher’s Weekly \nAn exceptionally thought-provoking and important account that looks at race in a radical new way. For all readers—Library Journal (starred review) \nAn extremely interesting approach and a much-needed paradigm shift in the treatment of racialized trauma.—NY Journal of Books \nThough the highly-charged subject-matter might ordinarily be controversial in nature\, this text is written in a non-confrontational style apt to disarm\, engage and enlighten readers\, regardless of color or political persuasion. Kudos to Resmaa Menakem for such a sorely-needed seminal work which couldn’t be more practical or more timely\, given this bitterly-divided country’s current state of race relations.—The Harlem Dispatch \nSource: https://centralrecoverypress.com

It’s recommended that ladies wear skirts\, and there will be skirts available if needed. \nLink to Previous Ghost Feasting Talk & Cedar Healing Ceremony https://youtu.be/bauKAJzZjTM \nMore info about Cedar:\nFor thousands of years\, the cedar tree has been revered for its spiritual significance. Its wood was used for the doors of sacred temples and burned in cleansing ceremonies for purification. In addition\, cedar has a long history of use in indigenous sweat lodge ceremonies\, and the tree was thought to house important Gods and be an entrance to higher spiritual realms. \nCedar is first and foremost a medicine of protection. When first moving in\, it is often used to cleanse a home\, inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person\, place\, or object from unwanted influences. In addition\, cedar is often used in the sweat lodge ceremony. A few pinches are thrown on the red-hot rocks\, immediately sparking into a yellow glow and releasing their aroma. The smoke of burning cedar attracts good spirits and eliminates negative energies. \nCedar is also one of the four sacred plants of the indigenous American Indian Medicine Wheel and represents the Southern direction. The other plants contained in the Medicine Wheel are white sage representing the West\, sweetgrass representing the North\, and tobacco representing the East.

SUMMARY:Watermark Exhibit Opening and Reception: "Aabijijiwan"
DESCRIPTION:Ojibwe Pronunciation: aah-bih jih-jih-won \nListen: https://watermarkartcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Aabijijiwan.m4a \nWebpage: https://watermarkartcenter.org/aabijijiwan-it-flows-continuously/ ] \nBemidji\, MN – Watermark Art Center presents “Aabijijiwan – It Flows Continuously” to open May 13\, 2022 with a reception and artist conversation on Sunday May 15 from 2 – 4pm. This exhibit is the culmination of two and a half years of artistic and scientific collaboration between artists from opposite ends of the Misi Ziibi (Mississippi). Multimedia artists Karen Goulet’s (White Earth Nation\, Minnesota) and Monique Verdin’s (Louisiana’s United Houma Nation) works are interwoven in time as a representation the artists’ personal histories and those of Indigenous peoples who have lived on the banks of the river since time immemorial. Aabijijiwan gives voice to those stories that connect them to this waterway. \nLearn more about the role of this exhibit as part of the “Big River Continuum” \, a creative exchange involving collaboration between the University of Minnesota’s Itasca Biological Station at the Mississippi headwaters\, Watermark Art Center\, the Weisman Art Museum\, and Tulane University’s A Studio in the Woods in the Mississippi Delta at watermarkartcenter.org. Watermark galleries are free and open to the public Monday – Saturday from 10 to 5pm and located at 505 Bemidji Avenue N. in Bemidji\, Minnesota. 218-444-7570.
