DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a Traditional Cedar Healing Ceremony held in person on Friday\, May 20\, 2022. \nLocation & Time: East Side Neighborhood Services 1700 NE 2nd St\, Minneapolis\, MN 55413 from 4 PM to 8 PM. \nSpiritual Leaders: Dr. Dennis Jones/Pebaamibines (originally from Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation). Pebaamibines is also the author of Daga Anishinaabemodaa which presents basic lessons for learning Anishinaabemowin\, the language of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) people. Jason Hart from the Red Lake Nation. Joining them are AIFC’s Sharyl Whitehawk & Rich Antell. \nThis Ceremony is intended to help those who have experienced trauma\, stress\, grief and loss\, PTSD\, and work fatigue. \nThis Cedar Healing Ceremony is open to the community\, and families are welcome to attend in person. \nPlease bring a dish to share\, if you can. Its wood was used for the doors of sacred temples and burned in cleansing ceremonies for purification. In addition\, cedar has a long history of use in indigenous sweat lodge ceremonies\, and the tree was thought to house important Gods and be an entrance to higher spiritual realms. \nCedar is first and foremost a medicine of protection. When first moving in\, it is often used to cleanse a home\, inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person\, place\, or object from unwanted influences. In addition\, cedar is often used in the sweat lodge ceremony. A few pinches are thrown on the red-hot rocks\, immediately sparking into a yellow glow and releasing their aroma. The smoke of burning cedar attracts good spirits and eliminates negative energies. \nCedar is also one of the four sacred plants of the indigenous American Indian Medicine Wheel and represents the Southern direction. The other plants contained in the Medicine Wheel are white sage representing the West\, sweetgrass representing the North\, and tobacco representing the East.

In partnership with IRoots\, this series is a way to create a space that engages families with local Asian drag performers through children’s literature; while imparting sincere lessons on the inclusion and appreciation for varying self-expressions amongst LGBTQ+ people within our communities.\n\n\nOpening of Roots Café – Indigenous Youth-Led Coffee Shop on the East Side\nIndigenous Roots in partnership with the International Indigenous Youth Council – Twin Cities is excited to launch a youth creative economy opportunity through the opening of Roots Café located inside the gallery space of Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center. This exhibit is the culmination of two and a half years of artistic and scientific collaboration between artists from opposite ends of the Misi Ziibi (Mississippi). Multimedia artists Karen Goulet’s (White Earth Nation\, Minnesota) and Monique Verdin’s (Louisiana’s United Houma Nation) works are interwoven in time as a representation the artists’ personal histories and those of Indigenous peoples who have lived on the banks of the river since time immemorial. Aabijijiwan gives voice to those stories that connect them to this waterway. \nLearn more about the role of this exhibit as part of the “Big River Continuum” \, a creative exchange involving collaboration between the University of Minnesota’s Itasca Biological Station at the Mississippi headwaters\, Watermark Art Center\, the Weisman Art Museum\, and Tulane University’s A Studio in the Woods in the Mississippi Delta at watermarkartcenter.org.
