Winter Carnival – Sunday, January 15th, Noon – 5 pm

Outdoors experiential learning of Dakota culture: Ice fishing, food, tea, and storytelling at the bark lodge and tipi, and hiking & harvesting of natural materials for a craft project.

A shuttle bus will be provided to transport participants between Paradise Cove and PIIC Bark Lodge. See the schedule below.

Kick-off with Community Welcoming

12 pm – 12:20 pm

•  Kick off the event outside at Paradise Cove with Thrive Ultd, welcoming and centering the community in preparation for learning and healing.

Fishing Education Sessions

12:30 pm – 4:00 pm

• Learn the art of ice fishing in relationship with ourselves, our community, and the land.  Led by Paul Dressen, Joey Taylor, Trayce Taylor &  Phil White

• A 40-minute education session will be held inside the Paradise Cove enclosure, including a sample of cooked fish, followed by 20 minutes of fishing on the ice.

  Participants are invited to bring skates to skate on the ice. 

Closing Remarks

4:30 – 5:00 pm

• Closing remarks and community prayer – Thrive Ultd

Bark Lodge – Food, Culture, Storytelling 12 pm – 5pm

• Gather at the PIIC Bark Lodge location, where there will be inside fires to gather, warm, share and prepare snack foods.

• An offering of teas from Trival Garden Assistant will be available.  Learn about the power of plants used in making tea offered by Drew Duffy

• Experience shelter, warmth, and family and community connectedness inside a tipi erected by PIIC youth led by Tori Campbell.

Storytelling Sessions

1:15 – 4:00 pm

• Learn about PIIC history, traditions, and relatives through the power of storytelling inside Tipi led by Barry Hand

Hike & Harvest

2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

• Hike and Harvest – Gather materials that will be used for Monday’s craft session at Clay and Creative Center – Nicky Buck & Rachel Rapp.

A shuttle bus will be provided to transport participants between Paradise Cove and PIIC Bark Lodge.
